Analysis of electromagnetic and electrostatic effects of particle impacts on spacecraft

چکیده
Particle impacts on spacecraft can cause considerable damage, even leading to complete failure. A theory for the resulting vehicle potential changes and the electromagnetic radiation from impact-induced plasma has been published by Close et al. (2010). Here we compare this theory to impacts registered by the Radio and Plasma Wave Science instrumentation on the Cassini spacecraft. We study both low-velocity (16 km/s) large particles (2.6 lm radius) detected in Saturn’s rings and high-velocity (450 km/s) small particles (1 nm radius) in the solar wind. The agreement with the theory is quite good. We also apply these results to earth orbit and conclude that both Electrostatic Discharge and Electromagnetic Pulse radiation are likely and could lead to spacecraft failure. 2011 COSPAR. Propagation and Interaction of Electrostatic and Electromagnetic Waves in Two Stream Free Electron Laser in the Presence of Self-Fields
A relativistic theory for two-stream free electron laser (FEL) with a one-dimensional helical wiggler and ion-channel guiding in the presence of self-fields are presented. A dispersion relation (DR) which includes coupling between the electromagnetic and the electrostatic waves is derived from a fluid model, with all of the relativistic terms related to the transverse wiggler motion. This DR is...
متن کاملDetection and Analysis of RF Data from Hypervelocity Impacts
Ground based tests were performed at the Max-Planck-Institute für Kernphysik Van de Graaff accelerator in Heidelberg, Germany to explore radiofrequency (RF) emission associated with hypervelocity particle impact induced plasma. Meteoroids and dust traveling between 11 and 72.8 km/s are constantly bombarding spacecraft while on orbit. These hypervelocity particles may cause electrical anomalies ...
متن کاملRF Signatures of Hypervelocity Impacts on Spacecraft
We investigate the radio frequency (RF) signature resulting from a hypervelocity impact on a spacecraft. While hypervelocity impactors, consisting of meteoroids, dust and orbital debris, are known to cause mechanical damage to satellites, very little is understood about the electrical effects associated with an impact. We present a theory to describe the behavior of the plasma produced from a h...
متن کاملElectromagnetic pulses generated by meteoroid impacts on spacecraft
[1] Meteoroid impacts on spacecraft are known to cause mechanical damage, but their electrical effect on spacecraft systems are not well characterized. Several reported spacecraft anomalies are suggestive of an electrical failure associated with meteoroid impact. We present a theory to explain plasma production and subsequent electric fields occurring when a meteoroid strikes a spacecraft, ioni...

Background: Electromagnetic fields have various effects on the biochemical and cellular behavior of microorganisms due to radiation. It is necessary to investigate more extensively the effects of these magnetic fields on some microorganisms, such as bacteria. The purpose of this study was tp investigate the effects of magnetic fields on Escherichia coli bacteria (PTCC 1330). Materials and Meth...
